Calligo Technologies, a cutting-edge Indian semiconductor startup, has raised $1.1 million in a pre-Series A funding round led by Seafund and Artha Venture Fund, as it looks to scale up its breakthrough POSIT-based silicon chip for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI workloads.

The funding will be used to develop version 2.0 of its silicon chip, expand its engineering team, and build strategic partnerships with system integrators, OEMs, and ODMs. This follows the success of its ver1.0 silicon, which was successfully built, tested, and shipped to early customers—marking a rare achievement for a homegrown semiconductor venture.

Founded by Anantha Kinnal, Rajaraman Subramanian, and Vinay N Hebbali, CalligoTech is pioneering the use of POSIT number systems—a revolutionary alternative to traditional floating-point representation—on a RISC-V platform. Its TUNGA accelerator board, powered by an octa-core POSIT-enabled RISC-V CPU, allows plug-and-play integration with existing x86, ARM, or PowerPC server systems and delivers superior accuracy, energy efficiency, and dynamic range.

Anantha Kinnal, Co-founder and CEO of CalligoTech, “Insatiable demand for HPC and AI compute has so far been met by adding more hardware. We’re tackling performance inefficiency at the root. POSIT enables reduced bit usage without sacrificing accuracy or dynamic range—unlocking tremendous potential for energy savings and scalable computing.”

Backing the company’s vision, Narendra Bhandari, General Partner at Seafund, said, “Compute requirements are growing exponentially. CalligoTech has already delivered ver1.0 from design to silicon and is rapidly moving toward taping out its next-gen chip. Their innovation is vital for sustainable AI and HPC growth.”

Anirudh A Damani, Managing Partner at Artha Venture Fund, added, “Calligo’s chips solve foundational performance bottlenecks in computing. POSIT could become the new standard as AI and large-scale modeling demands explode.”

CalligoTech has also integrated POSIT support across modified RISC-V compilers and frameworks including C/C++, Fortran, and Python—allowing existing HPC and AI applications to run without any source-code changes.

With a presence in US academic and supercomputing centres, and an increasing global developer interest, the company is preparing to tape out its 64-core POSIT-enabled System-on-Chip for large-scale deployment in the next 12–18 months.
