Building on BPCL’s eDrive Initiative, which launched in February 2022, the extended partnership will allow customers to access BPCL’s extensive charging network via IONAGE’s unified platform.

BPCL & IONAGE mobility outlook

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Bangalore-based eMobility service provider IONAGE have announced an extension of their partnership, with the aim of bolstering India’s electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem. This collaboration is set to ensure that BPCL’s current and future EV charging stations remain accessible through IONAGE’s platform, thereby increasing convenience for EV owners across the country.

IONAGE’s vision includes integrating over 100,000 EV chargers into its platform by 2028, enabling more than 10,000 small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to enter the EV charging market. This partnership with BPCL is a critical element of that vision, aiming to democratise access to EV charging facilities. Despite these ambitions, one wonders whether India’s current EV infrastructure is expanding quickly enough to keep pace with the projected growth in EV adoption.

IONAGE already aggregates and hosts chargers from multiple Charging Point Operators (CPOs), and adding BPCL’s network into the mix is expected to improve convenience for users by providing a single point of access for various charging services. Recent reports show that India has seen a 640% growth in public charging stations over the past two years, with Maharashtra and Delhi leading the charge. Still, with India aiming for 30% electrification of its automobile fleet by 2030, the pace of development may not be fast enough to meet the increasing demands, particularly in more rural and underserved areas.
