Bosch and Pirelli have signed a development cooperation agreement to advance intelligent tyre technology. This collaboration will combine Bosch's expertise in system-level hardware, software, and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors with Pirelli's Cyber Tyre technology, algorithms, and in-tyre sensors. The partnership is expected to bring significant benefits to drivers by improving vehicle safety, comfort, and driving dynamics.
The focus of this cooperation is to jointly develop new software-based solutions and enhance driving functions by leveraging in-tyre sensors that can collect and transmit data in real time. These sensors will allow vehicles to process tyre information instantly, enabling improved performance on the road. Bosch and Pirelli see this as a long-term partnership, with plans to explore advanced tyre signal computing and its potential to enhance vehicle dynamic controllers.
Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technology is the first of its kind, integrating sensors directly into tyres to gather crucial data that can be transmitted to the vehicle’s electronic control systems. An early success of this technology can be seen in its application on the Pagani Utopia Roadster, where tyre data is fed directly into Bosch’s ESP (Electronic Stability Program) control unit. This provides tailored driving conditions, optimising tyre performance and improving safety.
Bosch brings its advanced system-level hardware and software to the partnership. The company’s expertise in MEMS sensor technology, particularly in developing tyre pressure sensors that use the 'Bluetooth Low Energy' (BLE) standard, plays a crucial role in this collaboration. BLE technology allows for real-time data collection with minimal energy consumption, which will be key in ensuring the efficiency of in-tyre sensors.
