BorgWarner has achieved a significant industry milestone by launching the first electric Torque Vectoring and Disconnect (eTVD) system for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), starting with the Polestar 3 SUV and soon to be implemented in vehicles from another major European OEM later this year.
The technology is part of BorgWarner’s electric torque management system (eTMS) solutions portfolio, which plays a crucial role in optimising vehicle stability, enhancing dynamic performance, and improving traction during launch and acceleration.
Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of BorgWarner Drivetrain and Battery Systems, “Our new electric vehicle torque management systems showcase our multidisciplinary expertise, system integration capabilities, and the exceptional work of our BorgWarner team.” He highlighted the importance of sophisticated systems like the eTVD in a market that is increasingly leaning towards software-defined vehicles and modules. Weng also noted the positive feedback received from customers following their test drives, affirming the system’s impact on enhancing the driving experience.
Unlike traditional brake-based systems, the eTVD system offers a 3-in-1 solution that integrates torque vectoring and an on-demand disconnect function, eliminating the need for a conventional differential. This approach not only minimises brake interventions—thus reducing vibrations and harshness—but also decreases wear on brakes and tires, subsequently lowering particle emissions.
The advanced software and controls of BorgWarner’s eTVD systems are customisable, allowing OEMs to tailor them to specific platform needs and brand characteristics. This adaptability ensures that vehicles not only meet but exceed performance expectations regardless of road or weather conditions. Additionally, the innovative design and intuitive software of the eTVD system counteract the typical heaviness of BEVs, delivering a lighter, more agile driving feel while enhancing safety. The system’s ability to instantly respond to torque demands ensures a smooth and secure ride in even the most challenging scenarios.
Secures Major Contracts With XPeng
BorgWarner has also announced two significant business wins with XPeng, a prominent Chinese Smart EV manufacturer, for the supply of high-voltage hairpin (HVH) eMotor systems. These cutting-edge eMotor systems will be utilised in two upcoming SUV models from XPeng, with production slated to commence in 2025.
The contracts secured by BorgWarner include the provision of advanced oil-cooled 800V eMotor systems, specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of XPeng's future SUV models. The HVH220 eMotor, renowned for its high power and torque density, enhanced efficiency, and superior durability, will be the cornerstone of these propulsion systems.
