Boeing has entered into its largest-ever deal for procurement blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The contract for 7.5 million litres of blended SAF is also the largest by any airframer to date.
Boeing has contracted EPIC Fuels to supply the SAF needed, which will be used for its commercial production, test, ferry, Dreamlifter and customer flights at its US facilities in Everett, Seattle and North Charleston this year and help reduce the airframer’s carbon footprint.
Sheila Remes, Boeing Vice President - Environmental Sustainability, Boeing, said, “SAF is a safe, proven, immediate solution that will help achieve our industry’s long-term commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
SAF is made from several feedstocks and, since it is certified for commercial use, can be blended with traditional jet fuel without modifications to airplanes, engines or fuelling infrastructure.
EPIC Fuels already supplies customised blends ranging from 50/50% to 100% SAF for Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator programme.
Boeing has committed to delivering its commercial airplanes capable and certified to fly on 100% SAF by 2030. Currently, global aviation authorities allow a 50/50 SAF blend with conventional jet fuel for commercial flights.
