BMW Group Achieves CCC Digital Key Certification mobility outlook

BMW Group has become the first automobile manufacturer to receive the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key certificate, reaffirming its position as a leader in digital vehicle access. The Car Connectivity Consortium, a cross-industry standardisation organisation, awarded the certification based on its highest requirements for secure and interoperable vehicle-to-device access.

BMW has been a member of the CCC since 2017 and has played a pivotal role in developing and establishing cross-industry technologies and safety standards. The consortium includes not only automotive manufacturers but also leading smartphone manufacturers, tier one automotive suppliers, semiconductor manufacturers, and security product providers.

Since 2018, BMW has been at the forefront of digital vehicle access, allowing customers to unlock, lock, and start their vehicles using the BMW Digital Key on their smartphones via Near Field Communication (NFC). In 2021, the launch of the BMW iX introduced the BMW Digital Key Plus, the first application of ultra-wideband technology (UWB) for digital vehicle access. This advancement offers additional functions, increased security, and greater convenience, enabling customers to access their vehicles without needing to take out their smartphones.

The technology has been extended to the BMW compact class and the new MINI family, allowing BMW’s digital key to be shared with friends and family across platforms using conventional messenger services. The specification for UWB-based digital vehicle access was developed by BMW and its partners and has been established as a global standard for the automotive industry through the CCC.
