Daimler’s globally proven transmission enhances productivity, safety, and cost efficiency in India’s heavy-duty truck segment.

BharatBenz Torqshift Range mobility outlook

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has unveiled its latest BharatBenz heavy-duty truck (HDT) range, equipped with the advanced 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) branded as ‘Torqshift.’ This launch marks a significant milestone for the Indian market with the first bulk order of 80 BharatBenz 3532CM mining tippers already secured.

The 12-speed AMT technology, derived from Mercedes-Benz trucks, has been seamlessly integrated into BharatBenz’s portfolio, which includes the 4032T, 5532TS, 5532T, 2832CM, and the flagship 3532CM models. Designed to improve operational efficiency and safety, this innovation offers smooth, jerk-free gear shifting and faster transitions, enhancing overall drivability. The Torqshift transmission also features a shift lever integrated into the steering column, improving cabin ergonomics while reducing noise and heat.

Sreeram Venkateswaran, President and Chief Business Officer, DICV, noted that the Torqshift range is tailored for Indian road conditions and operational requirements, promising a transformative impact on mining and long-haul logistics. The inclusion of AMT in tractor trailers is expected to boost safety and efficiency, particularly as India’s road infrastructure continues to evolve.

The Torqshift transmission is engineered for heavy-duty applications supporting gross combination weights (GCW) ranging from 28 to 55 tonnes. Its design includes a wider selection of gear ratios, higher input torque capacity, and the elimination of synchromesh parts, resulting in enhanced reliability and reduced maintenance requirements. Additionally, the lightweight alloy housing optimises the power-to-weight ratio, contributing to the trucks’ superior performance and fuel efficiency. Extended service intervals further reduce operating costs, aligning with DICV’s focus on minimising total cost of ownership.

Pradeep Kumar Thimmaiyan, President and Chief Technology Officer, DICV, emphasised that the transmission reduces driving stress and enhances turnaround times while improving fuel efficiency and maintenance intervals. These features make the Torqshift-equipped trucks highly competitive in India’s growing heavy-duty vehicle market.

The BharatBenz Torqshift range also prioritises safety, incorporating advanced powertrain protection systems controlled by software. These systems minimise the risk of driveline damage in challenging conditions. Multiple driving modes, including auto, manual, power, and eco, ensure adaptability to diverse operational needs, while the smooth shifting mechanism enhances driver comfort and road safety.
