Bentley Motors has unveiled its plans for a transition in powertrain technology with the introduction of the Ultra Performance Hybrid, set to replace its venerable W12 engine. This new hybrid system not only promises to be the most dynamic and efficient in Bentley’s storied 105-year history but also the most powerful, signalling a new era for the luxury automaker.
The Ultra Performance Hybrid will build upon the foundation of Bentley’s existing hybrid technologies, elevating performance metrics significantly. The new system is expected to deliver over 750 PS, marking an increase of at least 91 PS over the most powerful iteration of the current W12 engine found in models like the Flying Spur and GT W12 Speed. In addition to its impressive power, the hybrid powertrain will boast a substantial electric-only range of 50 miles (80 km), underscoring its commitment to sustainability with a WLTP drive cycle CO2 figure under 50 g/km.
Bentley’s move towards hybridisation isn’t new; however, this latest development termed 'electrocharging' combines high performance with enhanced efficiency more aggressively than ever before. This step is part of Bentley's broader strategy, Bentley’s Beyond 100, aiming to electrify its entire lineup.
As Bentley phases out the 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine—a hallmark of the brand's engineering prowess over the last two decades with 105,000 units produced—the Ultra Performance Hybrid is poised to become the flagship powertrain for future Bentley models. The new engine's character was also previewed through a released sound clip, showcasing a blend of a cross-plane bass and a free-revving growl, indicative of its hybrid capabilities, which contrast starkly with the silence offered in its electric mode.
Further details about the Ultra Performance Hybrid will be disclosed in the upcoming weeks, as Bentley prepares to redefine luxury performance in the electrified era. Meanwhile, the brand’s enthusiasts have a last chance to acquire the remaining W12 and non-hybrid V8 models through Bentley’s global retail network.
