BASF’s Coatings division has launched its latest collection of automotive colour trends for 2024-2025, titled 'ROUTING.' The collection takes inspiration from the concept of communication routing in technology, reflecting the dynamic ways information is transmitted, processed, and received in an increasingly interconnected world.

Mark Gutjahr, Global Head of Automotive Color Design at BASF, explained, “Communication is lively, ever-changing, and mutually receptive—just like colours. Our observations show that how we handle and share information, whether through human or non-human intelligence, is driving colour trends in the automotive industry.”

This year's colour trends feature bold new shades, including purples and reds, energised dark achromatic tones, and vibrant metallic effects. The collection also places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with BASF incorporating renewable, recycled, and bio-based materials into the color formulations. The trends are designed with functionality in mind, particularly sensor-based driving systems.

In EMEA, HARBINGER’S INK, a deep black hue with unique sparkle effects, emphasises environmental responsibility by integrating carbon-negative and renewable components. SCINTILLATION, featured in Asia Pacific, offers a smart warm grey with a liquid metal effect, showcasing a commitment to low-emission technology. Meanwhile, in the Americas, HOLDING SWAY blends dual hues of purple and blue to symbolize cooperation and innovation.

BASF’s Coatings division continues to collaborate with automotive manufacturers, using these colour trends to shape future car designs. The colours introduced in this collection could begin to appear on the road within the next three to five years.

BASF’s expertise in colour design has already garnered recognition, with its colors ZENOMENON and EFFLORESCENCE recently winning Red Dot Design Awards, underscoring the company’s leadership in innovative automotive coatings.
