BAE Systems, a prominent leader in electric propulsion technology, and Eaton, a global power management company, are broadening their partnership to include advanced electric vehicle (EV) solutions tailored for heavy-duty trucks. This expansion builds on their 2023 memorandum of understanding, initially focused on medium-duty trucks, to now encompass heavier commercial vehicles exceeding 19 tons.
The collaboration will integrate BAE Systems’ electric motor technology and sophisticated power electronics with Eaton's newly developed HD 4-speed EV transmission. This combination aims to offer a robust and complete EV system applicable to a variety of zero-emission heavy-duty platforms, including delivery and regional haul trucks, school and transit buses, and vehicles used in material handling and refuse collection.
Bob Lamanna, Vice President and General Manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems, said, 'We are combining our expertise and proven technology to provide customers with a complete EV solution.' This move is set to address a broader spectrum of the commercial vehicle market by including vehicles with higher power and weight specifications, he added.
Mark Kramer, Business Unit Director of ePowertrain at Eaton's Vehicle Group, highlighted the enhanced performance and reliability of their systems. 'By expanding our scope to include more vehicle ratings, our robust system ensures high performance and reliability across a wider range of classes and sizes,' Kramer noted.
The partnership leverages BAE Systems’ extensive experience in vehicle electrification, featuring power electronics that utilise advanced materials and a compact, modular design. This design reduces the number of parts, enhancing reliability and adaptability across different vehicle platforms. Meanwhile, Eaton’s specialised MD and HD EV transmissions are engineered to improve range, grade capability, and acceleration for commercial electric vehicles.
