Autoliv, the global leader in automotive safety solutions, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by introducing airbag cushions made from 100% recycled polyester. This innovation significantly reduces the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of airbags.
In collaboration with key supply chain partners, Autoliv has developed yarns, fabrics, and cushions from 100% recycled polyester for airbag production. Testing of the new material has confirmed that the airbag cushion provides the same safety functionality as standard polyester airbags while reducing GHG emissions by approximately 50% at the polymer level.
Autoliv is committed to developing processes and products in a resource-efficient manner while minimising environmental impact. The airbag cushion made with 100% recycled polyester is now part of Autoliv's product portfolio and available to global customers.
Jordi Lombarte, Chief Technology Officer at Autoliv, said, 'We have successfully proven the technology and are ready to offer it to our customers worldwide. We are leading the way in developing airbags made from recycled polyester for current airbags. This milestone reflects our commitment to climate action and circularity, and our journey toward a more sustainable future,' continued Lombarte.
