Israeli artificial intelligence startup, AutoBrains' 'Unsupervised AI' technology that resulted from a decade of research and development, is driving Continental's initiative to market its advanced and proven Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Backed by more than 200 patents and a 2-year incubation period with Continental, the Unsupervised AI will support the German Tier-1 company's growth strategy in the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) market.

According to AutoBrians, Unsupervised AI operates fundamentally different from traditional deep learning systems currently used in ADAS. It is based on multi-disciplinary research and development that allows the system to learn and process independently and interpret relevant data from the vehicle's surroundings in real-time. Interestingly, the system will lead to the perception that operates much like a human brain.

Heavily reduced reliance on expensive and often error-prone manually labelled training data sets are vital advantages of this disruptive technology over traditional deep learning.

The unsupervised AI system successfully interprets and navigates unusual driving scenarios and edge cases where traditional supervised learning systems are least reliable. It increases driving safety and helps accelerate the adoption of ADAS and vehicles capable of higher levels of autonomy. Reduced dependence on stored data makes AutoBrains' system needing about ten times less computing power than currently available systems, eventually reducing cost and increase the accessibility of ADAS across market segments. It gels well with the emerging regulations insisting on more driver assistance capabilities for passenger and commercial vehicles.

AutoBrains emerged from AI tech company, Cortica after identifying the potential of the unsupervised learning technology to vastly improve AI for the automotive industry. Following Continental's Business Unit ADAS and co-pace The Startup Programme of Continental, in 2019, AutoBrains was formally spun off to focus exclusively on building unsupervised AI for autos.
