In a significant stride towards modernising public transportation, Allison Transmission has partnered with Ashok Leyland, the flagship of the Hinduja Group, to introduce the first low-floor city buses with fully automatic transmissions in Tamil Nadu.

The new fleet features Ashok Leyland's 12-meter stepless-entry diesel buses equipped with Allison's Torqmatic Series transmissions, specifically the T 280 model. This collaboration marks a transition from manual to automatic transmissions, a change that is set to enhance accessibility and improve passenger experience, particularly for those with disabilities.

The buses are powered by the robust Ashok Leyland H-series six-cylinder four-valve engine, delivering 184 kilowatts (246 horsepower), and assembled at Allison’s manufacturing facility near Chennai.

Heidi Schutte, Vice President of EMEA, APAC, and South America Sales, Allison Transmission, said, “This is a major step forward in our efforts to lead the transition to fully automatic transmissions in India. We’re pleased to play an integral role in advancing transportation in the state of Tamil Nadu and look forward to continued partnership with Ashok Leyland and transit customers across the country.”

With this rollout, Allison Transmission solidifies its leadership in the Indian low-floor city bus segment, continuing its commitment to bringing enhanced reliability, smoother operations, and better accessibility to public transportation.
