BMW Motorrad has issued a recall for the new R 1300 GS adventure motorcycle in International markets. The company says that there have been cases of malfunctions in the relay system and this is causing the motorcycle to stall. Motorcycles built before 18 March are ones that have been recalled and so far, BMW has had eight units suffer melted or burnt relays.
As part of the remedial measures, BMW is replacing the faulty semiconductors with an electromechanical starter relay. This is being done free of charge.
About 25,000 units seem to have been affected by the faulty relay. However, along with the hardware change, the R 1300 GS will also a need software patch which will be done at the service center. BMW has clarified that the bikes made after 18 March have the new relay and remain unaffected.
