Vietnam’s premier electric vehicle manufacturer, VinFast Auto, is charting a new course in its ambitious global expansion strategy with its official entry into India.
After laying the foundation stone for a $500 million manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu earlier this year, the company has recalibrated its approach to kick-start operations by importing Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits and launching two electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7, before the festive season of 2025. This move highlights the company’s resilience and determination to thrive in one of the fastest-growing EV markets globally.
Navigating Challenges, Seizing Opportunities
VinFast’s foray into India aligns with its broader vision of capitalising on the booming EV segment in a market poised for exponential growth. However, the company’s journey, off late, globally, has not been without obstacles. It has faced financial losses, negative reviews for some of its models in the US, regulatory scrutiny, and skepticism about EV reliability in its home market. Despite these challenges, VinFast is recalibrating its strategies to emerge stronger, leveraging India’s potential to establish itself as a key player in the global EV space.
India Strategy
To make its mark in the Indian market, VinFast unveiled the VF 6 and VF 7 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, showcasing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer-centric solutions. These SUVs are tailored to meet the expectations of Indian consumers with advanced technology, cutting-edge design, and an emphasis on affordability.
VinFast also announced plans to establish a robust dealership network and prioritise localisation through partnerships with global suppliers. The company’s Tamil Nadu manufacturing facility, spanning 400 acres, is expected to be operational for CKD assembly before the festive season this year with a plan to make a pivotal role in its long-term strategy.
Speaking at the event, Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, emphasised India’s strategic importance stating “India, the third-largest automobile market, holds immense potential for sustainable mobility solutions. With the launch of our flagship VF 7 and VF 6, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future.”
Revolutionary Products: VF 6 and VF 7
The VF 6 and VF 7 represent the pinnacle of VinFast’s design philosophy and technological prowess.
- VF 7: With its sharp aerodynamics and dynamic aesthetic, the VF 7 exudes sophistication. It features 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and signature V-shaped lighting. Inside, it boasts a futuristic HD cockpit-style touchscreen, premium seats, and advanced ADAS safety features.
- VF 6: Designed with young, environmentally conscious families in mind, the VF 6 combines modern features with emotional appeal. It offers 18-inch alloy wheels, a seamless interior design, and cutting-edge safety and infotainment systems.
Both models promise a luxurious driving experience, advanced battery technology, and a focus on safety, making them ideal for Indian roads and consumer preferences.
Addressing Key Consumer Concerns
VinFast recognises the unique challenges Indian EV buyers face, including concerns about battery performance and after-sales support. According to Ashwin Ashok Patil, Deputy CEO of Sales & Marketing at VinFast India, the company is committed to alleviating these concerns through advanced battery technology and flexible after-sales policies. “Our offerings aim to make EVs the primary vehicle choice for Indian families, blending futuristic design with practicality,” he said.
VinFast’s value proposition includes a comprehensive service network and innovative after-sales solutions, ensuring a seamless ownership experience for Indian customers.
A Vision For Global And Local Impact
Backed by its parent company, Vingroup, VinFast has established a presence in 12 countries across three continents. Since transitioning to an all-electric portfolio in 2019, the company has prioritised sustainability and innovation, aligning with its vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
“India’s diversity and dynamism inspire us to innovate and deliver green mobility solutions globally,” Patil added, underscoring VinFast’s alignment with the Indian government’s mission to achieve 30% EV adoption by 2030.
Expanding EV Ecosystem
VinFast’s ambitions in India extend beyond SUVs. The company showcased its global EV ecosystem at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, including electric scooters like the Evo and Theon, the futuristic e-bike Dragonfly, and a concept lifestyle truck. This diverse lineup reflects VinFast’s commitment to catering to various mobility needs, from urban commuting to commercial transportation.
A Greener Future
VinFast’s entry into India marks a significant milestone in its journey to redefine sustainable mobility. By combining advanced technology, cutting-edge design, and a customer-centric approach, the company is poised to play a transformative role in India’s EV landscape.
