Road accidents claim the lives of nearly 17 people every hour in India, a grim statistic driven by factors such as driver negligence, inadequate infrastructure, and vehicle-related issues.
According to research, most accidents can be averted if the vehicle is equipped with driver assistance features. Improving the existing active safety features such as brakes, etc., can reduce the risk to some extent. These active safety systems will engage to either prevent the crash from occurring or reduce the severity of an unavoidable collision.
While two-wheelers account for the most sales in the Indian auto sector, ironically, they also account for the highest number of accidents and fatalities. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data confirms that.
What is also striking, is that the severity of accidents, defined as the number of persons killed per 100 accidents, has risen sharply from 21.6 in 2005 to 36 in 2020.
Globally about 30% of all road crash deaths involve motorcyclists, with countries like Thailand reporting as many as 5,000 motorcyclist deaths.
To address this issue, Sentiance, a leading company in motion insights and a pioneer in road safety technology, announced the expansion of its innovative Crash Detection technology to motorcycles. Originally designed for cars, this advanced system has been adapted to cater specifically to the unique challenges faced by motorcyclists.
In India, road accidents claim the lives of nearly 17 people every hour, primarily due to driver negligence, poor infrastructure, and vehicle malfunctions. Research suggests that many of these tragedies could be prevented with the integration of advanced driver assistance systems. Enhancing active safety features including brakes, could mitigate risks by either averting crashes altogether or lessening the impact of unavoidable collisions.
Despite their popularity, two-wheelers represent a paradox in the Indian automotive sector as they lead to the highest number of accidents and fatalities. Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways supports this disturbing trend.
This issue is not confined to India. Globally, motorcyclists account for about 30% of all road crash deaths, with certain countries, such as Thailand, reporting up to 5,000 motorcyclist fatalities annually. In response to this critical problem, Sentiance, a global leader in motion insights and a trailblazer in road safety technologies, has expanded its pioneering Crash Detection technology to motorcycles. Originally developed for cars, this sophisticated system has been customized to address the specific dynamics and risks associated with motorcycle use.
Leveraging cutting-edge interpretive AI and machine learning, Sentiance's Crash Detection utilises smartphone sensors and GPS data to monitor motion in real-time. This allows the technology to detect and respond to potential crashes with unprecedented accuracy and speed, a crucial innovation given the higher risk profile of motorcycles on the road.
'To address the alarming statistic that 30% of all global road crash deaths involve motorcyclists, with countries like Thailand reporting as many as 5,000 motorcyclist deaths annually, we've expanded our technology to tackle this urgent issue head-on,' stated Toon Vanparys, CEO of Sentiance. 'Our solution is set to transform the safety standards for motorcyclists, especially in regions where motorcycles are not just a mode of transport but a lifeline.'
The new motorcycle-specific Crash Detection operates directly on mobile devices, ensuring user privacy and data security without the need for additional hardware. This feature is particularly vital in regions such as APAC, the Middle East, India, Africa, and South America, where motorcycles are extensively used for daily commuting and commercial deliveries.
By enhancing safety features, the technology not only aims to save lives by reducing accident response times but also strives to improve driving behaviors through actionable data-driven insights. This could significantly lower the number of accidents and fatalities, changing the landscape of road safety for motorcyclists around the world.
This innovation by Sentiance marks a significant milestone in the field of road safety technology, promising a safer future for motorcyclists globally by making advanced safety tools accessible even in cost-sensitive markets.
