Motorcyclists have a strong affinity for protecting their machines and keeping them in tip-top order. A variety of manufacturers offer a wide range of basic maintenance products. We got a care package from Castrol to sample their range of shiners and lubes. Luckily, we had a dirt-covered Himalayan to clean, as it had just come from a ride through Umling La.
This selection includes a Chain cleaner (110ml INR 250), Chain Lube (106ml INR 250), 3-in-1 Shiner (100ml INR 175), and Anti-Rust Lubricant Spray (421ml INR 361). All these prices are MRP, so you will find them at lesser prices depending on where you purchase them.
The first thing we did was spray the dirty chain with the chain cleaner. This works great, pulling out all the grime and gunk with ease. Spray it generously and clean it off with a brush to completely degrease the chain. As we all know, the chain attracts the most stubborn bits, so it was refreshing to see the ease at which Castrol's chain cleaner pulled out everything deeply. It's a solid pass there, and at this price point, it works really well.
Next, we put the 3-in-1 Shiner to good use. It gave the shine back to the Himalayan, especially this black-coloured version, which is even harder to clean. The issue is that you need a lot of the stuff, spraying it thrice all over to get the shine. It does its job well, but the extensive use means you will run out quicker than other cleaners available in the market. But good marks there for Castrol, as the shine is rewarding. It has UV protection for your motorcycle's paint, so it will be good if you mostly have to park outside in the sun.
Also, note that always use a microfibre cloth to clean your motorcycle. This enhances the effect of the cleaner and holds particles in the cloth itself, helping you avoid scratches from dust. Castrol's 3-in-1 cleaner works great on all paint surfaces, but the glass surfaces are not to be cleaned by it. This is annoying as all motorcyclists know you need one spray to clean it all in one go. So yes, a bad mark there for Castrol.
The Castrol chain lube, on the other hand, is a great compound. It sticks to the chain well and does not risk smearing the inside of the wheel, which is irritating with most chain lubes. We also like the spray action, as it is directed well and does not feel like a 700psi canister. It seeps deep into the chain parts, thus forming a layer protecting the seals around the O, X, or Z.
Castrol's anti-rust lubricant spray provides the finishing touches. Now, most motorcyclists do not pay much attention to the importance of anti-rust, while seasoned riders use WD40 as an alternative. Finally, Castrol has a specialised spray to protect metal hinges, bolts, squeaky suspension bits, and even keyholes, which are all prone to rust. This spray is liquid gold, especially in the rainy season, and for folks who live near the coast. Squirt it in metal parts you think are prone to corrosion, and its hydrophobic nature keeps moisture away, saving you annoying expenses. You can even use it to loosen stubborn bolts, and with a can that big, its uses can be carried over to your car as well.
It is a great package from Castrol for cleaning and maintaining your precious machine. But remember that these products sit in a market full of competitive products designed to perform similarly, some more than others. Motul, Muc-Off, Kawasaki, Yamaha—all of them are available, albeit some cost more than others. Castrol has size on its side, though; these 100-150ml bottles are easy to package while out on rides in your backpack or saddlebags. We suggest you give them a try; they're all available at discounts right now.
