The evolution of vehicle technologies has outpaced the development of safety measures, posing challenges for ensuring road safety. Although India's road infrastructure has seen improvements, the surge in high-performance vehicles and increased driving speeds necessitates more effective safety systems. Recent reports have flagged a significant increase in road fatalities, with 1.68 lakh lives lost in 2022, averaging 462 deaths daily, or one life every three minutes. The United Nations report paints an even grimmer picture, estimating a staggering 800 lives lost every day in the country.
Despite India's aim to reduce fatalities by 50% by 2030, the persistently rising road mishaps remain a serious concern. To achieve this goal, all vehicle segments, particularly two-wheelers, require heightened attention from various stakeholders, including the Government, manufacturers, suppliers, testing agencies, researchers, and society at large. The Government's recent announcement to implement the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) from October 1, 2023, overseen by the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), is a step in the right direction to curb road accidents.
The upcoming 'Making Mobility Safe, Secure' conference organized by Mobility Outlook is set to address these concerns. With the theme 'Leveraging Innovative & Affordable Technologies To Make Indian Roads Safer,' the conference aims to rally all stakeholders and provide a platform for discussions and demonstrations of products and technologies that contribute to reducing road accidents and fatalities.
