Mercedes-Benz India sharpened its focus on electric mobility further by launching two new Battery Electric Vehicles on 9th January—the G580 with EQ technology and the EQS SUV 450

According to Lance Bennett, Vice President-Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India, transforming the legendary G-Class into the electric G580 was a “monumental endeavour.’ Every aspect of its design and engineering reflects a commitment to honouring its iconic heritage while pushing the boundaries of innovation. “Maintaining the silhouette and its off-road prowess was no small feat, but we embraced the challenge head-on,” he noted.

At the heart of the G580 lies an innovative drivetrain featuring four independent electric motors. This unique configuration delivers improved performance and agility. The rear motors are connected by a rigid rear axle, ensuring better traction on challenging terrains. A two-speed gearbox on each axle enhances gear reduction, providing an ideal low-range mode for serious off-road adventurers. Beneath its robust frame, a lightweight yet strong carbon composite underbody guard shields the battery from external impacts, ensuring durability in the toughest conditions.

Distinctive design enhancements set the G580 apart. The raised bonnet and air curtains over the rear wheel arches aren’t just for show—they optimise aerodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. Like all G-Class models, the G580 underwent the legendary Schöckl test (a challenging off-road test track on the Schöckl mountain in Austria ) on the gruelling 336 times trail, to prove its resilience; 336 is the magic number that ensures every G meets the highest standard of durability, reliability and off road capability and remains stronger than time. Only after conquering this rigorous course is it awarded the coveted Schöckl badge, proudly displayed on the B-pillar, he noted.

According to him the performance is electrifying as the G580 generates 587 horsepower and a colossal 1,164 Nm of torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. Its 116 kWh battery, paired with an intelligent recuperation system, delivers a WLTP range of up to 473 kms. Fast charging allows the battery to go from 10% to 80% in a mere 32 minutes—enough to traverse the legendary Schöckl trail 13 times on a single charge, Bennett mentioned.

The G580 also redefines off-road capability with its electric architecture. It conquers 45° inclines, even in reverse, and wades through water up to 850 mm deep. The battery pack is ingeniously integrated within the ladder chassis, ensuring it remains dustproof and watertight. Its groundbreaking four-motor system unlocks unique off-road manoeuvres, such as the 'G Turn,' enabling the vehicle to rotate on the spot—a game-changer for navigating tight trails. The 'G Steering' function further enhances agility, tightening the turning circle by braking the inner wheel on sharp bends.

Drivers can customise their off-road experience with the dynamic select function, offering modes like 'Rock Mode,' which allows for effortless hill descents and ascents. Steering wheel paddles enable precise speed adjustments, making the toughest terrains a breeze to conquer.

To mark its debut, the G580 introduces the exclusive 'Edition One.' This limited-edition model is available in five colours, including the bespoke 'South Sea Blue Magno.' Its AMG Line styling, Night Package, and 20-inch aero wheels in black, paired with matching black door handles, exude understated sophistication. Inside, the Edition One boasts a superior-line interior featuring blue carbon trims, Nappa leather upholstery in silver and black, and intricate blue topstitching. Unique badging on the passenger grab handle adds a personalised touch to this collector’s item.

“With the G580, we’ve not only electrified a legend but also set a new standard for luxury, performance, and sustainability. This is more than just an off-road vehicle—it’s a masterpiece engineered for those who dare to go beyond,” he added.

Under the hood—or rather, the sleek body—the EQS SUV 450 4MATIC delivers improved performance. Its twin permanently excited synchronous electric motors, mounted on each axle, power the fully variable all-wheel drive system, ensuring optimal traction and control in all conditions. Together, these motors generate a formidable 265 kW (360 hp) of power and 800 Nm of torque, propelling the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds. This fusion of power and efficiency defines a new standard in electric mobility.

The exterior design of the EQS SUV reflects its Electric Art Line pedigree. With striking 21-inch light-alloy wheels finished in black with a high-sheen effect, the SUV exudes sophistication and modernity. Inside, the experience is elevated by cutting-edge technology and luxurious materials, perfectly blending form and function.

At the heart of the EQS SUV’s interior lies the revolutionary MBUX Hyperscreen. This expansive digital interface seamlessly integrates three displays, including a 17.7-inch central OLED screen, creating an immersive, driver-centric environment. Intuitive and responsive, the Hyperscreen delivers information and entertainment with unparalleled clarity and impact.

Adding to the refined atmosphere, the Burmester 3D surround sound system immerses passengers in rich, concert-quality audio. Powered by 710 watts and featuring 15 expertly placed speakers, it transforms every journey into a sensory delight. Meanwhile, the ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus system, equipped with a HEPA filter, ensures better air quality for a refreshing cabin experience, a feature exclusive to the 5-seat configuration.

The EQS SUV is not just about comfort and technology; it is a full-size SUV built to conquer the road with style and substance. It combines luxury with practicality, offering features like a spare wheel for added convenience, a nod to thoughtful engineering tailored to meet diverse needs.
