Formare is more than a skill-building programme—it’s a catalyst for empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and driving the wheels of progress forward.

Last September, Maxion Wheels, a global leader in wheel manufacturing, brought its acclaimed Formare programme to India, marking its first expansion beyond the Americas. Already a success in Mexico and Brazil, the programme’s Indian chapter marks a significant milestone in fostering skill development and social upliftment, with plans to expand to South Africa this calendar.

Tailored For India: A Unique Approach To Skill Development

Launched in collaboration with the Iochpe Foundation, which celebrates 35 years of social innovation, and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Formare in India is tailored to address the region’s specific needs. Unlike the secondary education framework of the programme in Latin America, the Indian curriculum places a stronger emphasis on technology at the diploma level.

“India is the right choice for us to set up the Formare programme outside the Americas,” said Pieter Klinkers, CEO of Maxion Wheels. The decision aligns with the Indian government’s focus on skill development and uplifting economically weaker sections of society. Klinkers highlighted that the programme’s goal is not to mould participants into future employees of Maxion but to equip them with the skills and industry acumen necessary to thrive in a competitive job market.

A Comprehensive Support System

The Formare programme offers more than just technical education. It provides holistic support, including full tuition reimbursement, uniforms, transportation, meals, and a monthly stipend. Upon completing the two-year programme, participants will receive a Manufacturing Technology Diploma, opening doors to diverse employment opportunities in the industry.

The inaugural batch of 26 students, including five young women, is currently undergoing training. Dr Suresh Gosavi, Vice Chancellor of SPPU, emphasized the programme's alignment with India’s Skill India Mission. 'Through this initiative, we are creating a seamless blend of academic rigor and industry exposure,' he said. Students will dedicate 30% of their time to theoretical classes taught by SPPU faculty, while 70% is spent gaining hands-on experience in Maxion Wheels’ manufacturing facilities.

The Factory As A Living Laboratory

A standout feature of the programme is its integration of theoretical knowledge with practical training. Unlike traditional technical institutions with limited laboratory facilities, Formare transforms Maxion’s factory into a 'living laboratory.' Students gain firsthand experience in manufacturing processes, from material selection to forging operations, producing real-world products under expert guidance.

“We teach students everything from materials technology to mechanics, tooling, and engineering drawing. By immersing them in an industrial environment, they gain a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing technology, which is a critical industry need,” Dr Gosavi explained.

Breaking Barriers With Local Language Education

Recognising the challenges faced by students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, Formare ensures that instruction is accessible. Faculty members deliver lessons in both English and regional languages such as Marathi in Maharashtra, helping students grasp concepts more effectively. Students are also allowed to write their exams in their local language, in line with guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Department of Higher Education.

“Writing textbooks in local languages ensures inclusivity, enabling students to learn in a language they are comfortable with while also gaining proficiency in English,” Dr Gosavi noted.

Bridging Academia & Industry

The Formare programme catalyses the synergy between academia and industry. By embedding students in the factory environment from day one, the initiative creates a seamless integration of education and practical training. This collaboration not only enhances the employability of students but also sets a benchmark for future industry-academia partnerships.

“This is a unique initiative where students, from the very beginning, are immersed in an industrial setup. They leave the programme with a wealth of practical knowledge, and the confidence to succeed in the broader job market,” said Gosavi.

A Bright Future Ahead

With its tailored curriculum, comprehensive support system, and focus on real-world training, the Formare programme in India is poised to empower underprivileged youth and contribute to the nation’s progress. As Maxion Wheels expands this transformative initiative globally, its focus on education and social responsibility continues to sharpen as a model for meaningful change.
