The launch of the Kia Syros positions Kia India as a strategic player in the fiercely competitive compact SUV segment. In a discussion, Gwanggu Lee, MD and CEO of Kia India, and Hardeep Singh Brar, National Head of Sales and Marketing, explained how the technological prowess and futuristic design language of the Syros align with its ambitious goals
Segment-First Innovation For Compact SUVs
The Kia Syros breaks new ground with its focus on over-the-air (OTA) updates for efficiency and performance metrics, making it the first compact SUV in the segment to offer this technology. With 22 controllers managed remotely, the Syros can adapt to performance and efficiency requirements post-launch, much like smartphone updates. This feature not only reduces the dependency on service centres but also ensures the vehicle remains future-ready.
The Syros integrates other features including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Level 2. These encompass 16 autonomous features, such as Lane-Keep Assist and Forward Collision Avoidance, aimed at providing drivers with enhanced safety and convenience. These innovations position the SUV as a leader in its category till the price gets announced.
Navigating India’s Sub-4-Metre SUV Segment Growth
The compact SUV segment in India continues to demonstrate strong growth, with an estimated 17% year-on-year increase in 2024. According to Hardeep Singh Brar, this momentum reflects consumer preferences for SUVs that offer a balance of compact exteriors and spacious interiors. The Syros aligns perfectly with these expectations, featuring loads of interior space despite its sub-4-metre dimensions.
Kia aims to capture an increasing share of this growing segment. Currently holding 15% of the market across the compact and mid-SUV categories, the brand targets an ambitious 20% share by 2025. The Syros is expected to play a noticeable role in achieving this growth appealing to urban buyers seeking compact yet feature-rich SUVs.
Balancing Consumer Preferences With Market Trends
The Syros’ powertrain options, including petrol and diesel variants, reflect Kia’s strategy to cater to diverse consumer needs. Despite a declining preference for diesel across lower price brackets, demand remains robust in the premium segments. Approximately 17-18% of overall vehicle sales in the INR 10 lakh-plus category continue to be diesel-powered, a trend Kia intends to capitalise on.
Interestingly, Kia decided against incorporating an Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) in the Syros, opting instead for traditional manual and automatic options. This move addresses consumer feedback and avoids potential cannibalisation with models like the Sonet, which already offers iMT. By simplifying trim options and targeting specific customer preferences, Kia ensures a streamlined production and marketing strategy. And probably the iMT also is a very niche audience which can be avoided for the Syros.
Flexibility In Production & Export Strategy
India remains the sole production hub for the Kia Syros for now, because India is the only market with this criterion. While the Syros caters primarily to the domestic market, Kia plans to export it to over 70 countries further solidifying India’s role as a manufacturing powerhouse. The company anticipates exports of approximately 50,000 units in 2025, including knock-down kits, contributing 15-17% of the Syros’ total production.
Moreover, the Syros is tailored for India’s unique tax environment which heavily influences vehicle pricing. Gwanggu Lee emphasised the need for tax rationalisation to spur automotive growth, arguing that vehicles are now a necessity rather than a luxury. Such changes, he argued, would not only benefit automakers but also stimulate broader economic growth through increased employment and consumer spending.
As the Indian automotive industry recovers from a challenging year marked by muted growth and external factors, the Syros is well-positioned to capture consumer attention and drive market share. By aligning its offerings with consumer expectations and leveraging India’s manufacturing capabilities, Kia underscores its commitment to the Indian market.
