As the automotive landscape rapidly evolves, UNO Minda is not just keeping pace—it is anticipating the future. With a vision that extends five to ten years ahead, the company is actively shaping next-generation EV solutions, digital integration, and advanced automotive systems.

Operating across 73 manufacturing plants worldwide, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Spain, and Mexico, UNO Minda supplies over 20 categories of components and systems to leading Indian and global OEMs across Asia, North and South America, and Europe.

In a recent interaction with this writer, Nirmal K Minda, CMD, Uno Minda Group said that at the heart of its innovation strategy are strategic Joint Ventures (JVs) with world-renowned German, Korean, and Japanese technology partners. With over 15 JVs, the company blends global expertise with manufacturing excellence, continuously pushing technological boundaries to maintain its leadership in the automotive sector.

Recognising software as the driving force behind the next wave of automotive innovation, UNO Minda has established a dedicated software centre in Bangalore. With a team of close to 100 engineers, this hub is enhancing in-house digital capabilities while also supporting global partners, including collaborators in Germany.

The company’s recent showcase of groundbreaking products and technologies underscores its commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions—not just for today, but for the next decade.

Focused on the megatrends of Personalized, Autonomous, Connected, and Electric (PACE) mobility, the company showcased a host of cutting-edge products and concept vehicles, at the Bharat Expo 2025, all under the tagline, 'Driving the New,' that perfectly encapsulated the Group’s vision of transforming the automotive landscape.

Among the notable displays were Advanced Lighting Solutions, including connected pixel-based digital tail lamps, OLED lamps, and adaptive lighting systems that set new benchmarks for automotive lighting technology. These advancements ensure enhanced visibility, safety, and aesthetics, making driving safer and more efficient.

Personalized and Smart Innovations pavilion showcased some of the most forward-thinking products including augmented reality heads-up displays for an immersive driver experience, Capsense switches for intuitive control, AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems) to enhance pedestrian safety, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) that bring a new level of convenience and safety to modern vehicles. UNO Minda’s ability to integrate software-defined vehicle controls also demonstrated its expertise in making vehicles more intelligent and adaptable to future needs.

In the Electrification Solutions section, the Group unveiled its dedicated Green Mobility Zone, which featured several groundbreaking technology demonstrators. These included the TD125 electric skateboard, the TD425 electric buck, and the TD225 electric bike, showcasing a comprehensive and diverse portfolio for e-2W, e-3W, and e-4W.

The Group’s cutting-edge e-axles, advanced range extenders, and intelligent battery management systems highlighted their technical prowess in EV components. These products are designed to enhance the efficiency and range of EVs, making them more accessible and viable for mass adoption. The inclusion of dual charging capabilities and seamless connectivity further ensures that UNO Minda’s products are ready to meet the demands of the next-generation automotive market.

Advanced safety and convenience features such as Panolamp Ambient Lighting, cornering bending lamps, adaptive braking systems, and blind spot detection are significant technologies aiming to enhance driving experience while making every journey safer and more enjoyable. Features like lane change warnings, cruise control, and gesture controls demonstrated its focus on making vehicles more intuitive, user-friendly, and responsive to the driver’s needs.

Pushing Boundaries

UNO Minda continues to push the boundaries of innovation, integrating advanced technologies into both their two-wheelers and four-wheelers, driving the future of mobility. A key example is their development of ADASfor two-wheelers, with cutting-edge features such as cameras, radar systems, and driver assistance sensors built entirely in-house. This comprehensive approach not only enhances the rider’s experience but also contributes significantly to safety. For instance, their camera system can detect whether a rider is wearing a helmet, while heated grips and hands-on detectors ensure that riders keep both hands on the handlebars, preventing dangerous distractions like mobile phone usage while riding.

Safety features extend beyond the rider, with pedestrian safety technologies incorporated into the system to help prevent accidents. These advancements illustrate how the company is working towards a more connected, safe, and intuitive mobility experience. The company has also introduced a more holistic approach to EV integration. UNO Minda’s 2W X-in-One system combines the controller, reducer, motor, and electronic drive into a single, compact unit. This integration not only simplifies the electric drivetrain but also improves efficiency and performance, making EV adoption more accessible.

Looking ahead, UNO Minda is also focusing on localizing the production of critical EV components, such as the EV drive systems and battery cell packages. Currently, some components may still be imported, but the company plans to ramp up local manufacturing to enhance India’s EV capabilities and reduce reliance on external suppliers.

Unlike traditional heads-up displays that show minimal information on a small screen, UNO Minda is developing a full augmented reality screen. This display will not only show basic information like speed but will also provide real-time pedestrian and traffic data—such as pedestrian speed and whether they are likely to cross the road—allowing drivers to make more informed decisions. With these futuristic innovations, UNO Minda is driving the adoption of AI and augmented reality technologies to create a safer, smarter, and more connected driving experience.

Futuristic Cockpit

The concept of the futuristic cockpit is rapidly evolving into something far beyond traditional driving experiences. Imagine a living space on wheels, where conventional car controls are reimagined for ultimate comfort and ease. In this vision, the driving experience is transformed with gearless operation and acceleration controls integrated into the steering wheel. The driver’s interaction with the vehicle feels almost like playing with a joystick, where acceleration, braking, and all other controls are conveniently at your fingertips.

Further enhancing the experience, the seats can morph into massage chairs, allowing the driver to relax fully according to their mood, while the vehicle adjusts its settings for maximum comfort. This futuristic cockpit adapts to the driver’s needs, ensuring an unparalleled level of personalization and comfort during every ride.

Another key feature is the wireless charging system. Rather than needing a traditional charging station, the vehicle can simply park over a special floor-based charger. As the vehicle sits on top, it starts charging, with a 20 to 25-centimetre gap ensuring better efficiency. This innovative charging solution reduces the hassle of plug-in connections, making the process seamless and highly convenient.

In addition to these innovations, the cockpit also integrates haptics-based controls, which respond to touch and movement, offering a dynamic and engaging user experience. Whether the consumer desires something highly advanced or a more conventional set-up, the technology is designed to adapt to their preferences, making it as versatile as it is futuristic.

This vision is a showcase of cutting-edge technologies, with the flexibility for OEMs to pick and choose the solutions they want to implement. The system is progressive, allowing OEMs to gradually add more technologies to their vehicles over time, integrating new features without disrupting existing systems. The challenge, however, lies in ensuring seamless integration between multiple suppliers' technologies. This is where UNO Minda’s Tech Centers come into play, offering the necessary support and expertise to ensure that all components work harmoniously together.

According to the company, India's price-sensitive market presents a unique challenge. While high-tech solutions can be imported from developed countries, the real hurdle is delivering these innovations at a cost that the Indian market can bear. The key to success lies in finding the balance between cutting-edge technology and affordability, ensuring that these advancements remain accessible to consumers without compromising quality. This remains a critical challenge that UNO Minda continues to address through its innovative approach to cost-efficient mobility solutions.
