Fostering innovation, enhancing efficiencies, and adapting swiftly to market dynamics, the company sets a new standard for technological excellence in the automotive industry.

3M

In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles and advanced automotive technology, 3M stands as a pioneer, leveraging material science and innovative engineering to address key challenges and unlock new possibilities.

From optimising battery performance to revolutionising vehicle acoustics and light management, 3M's contributions resonate across every facet of the industry, driving progress in sustainability, efficiency, and user experience, Dhritisunder Bhattacharya - Senior General Manager R&D for India & SEA, 3M, said, during a recent interaction with Mobility Outlook.

Revolutionising EV Batteries For Range, Sustainability

As the automotive industry pivots towards electrification, the battery emerges as the heart of every electric vehicle. However, designing batteries that extend range, reduce weight, and enhance recyclability presents formidable challenges. Addressing these, 3M is reimagining battery pack architectures with advanced thermal management systems, enabling greater efficiency and commercial viability. The transition from conventional cell formats—such as cylindrical and pouch cells—to innovative blade cells is transforming energy density and optimising space utilisation.

The company is also focusing on enabling higher energy density per cell while mitigating the constraints imposed by limited volume and thermal challenges. By collaborating with manufacturers to integrate these innovations, 3M is shaping the next generation of batteries, pushing the boundaries of performance and sustainability.

Recyclability remains a critical hurdle in the lifecycle of EV batteries. 3M works closely with cell manufacturers and OEMs to develop materials and systems that facilitate battery disassembly and repurposing. While the ultimate responsibility for recycling lies with the industry, 3M's solutions ensure that the foundational elements of sustainability are built into the design phase itself.

Transforming Automotive Acoustics, Assembly

Acoustic performance plays a crucial role in modern vehicles, particularly as electric vehicles eliminate engine noise and make cabin sounds more noticeable. 3M has evolved from providing small acoustic material components to collaborating directly with OEMs to design advanced absorbers and barrier materials. For example, in the Mahindra XUV700, 3M’s acoustic solutions are integral to reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), enhancing the driving experience, he mentioned.

Beyond acoustics, the company is redefining automotive assembly through innovative adhesives and films. By reducing the reliance on traditional welding and multi-step painting processes, its solutions streamline production while improving environmental sustainability. Films, for instance, replace certain paint applications, increasing productivity and reducing chemical use. The result is an efficient, cost-effective manufacturing process that aligns with the industry's sustainability goals.

Innovations In Lightweighting, Display Technology

Lightweighting remains a priority as automakers strive to enhance vehicle efficiency without compromising strength. While 3M does not directly influence sheet metal decisions, it plays a pivotal role in simplifying assembly, joints, and integrating lightweight materials like barrier absorber combinations. These materials are up to 60% lighter than conventional alternatives, he said.

Display technology in vehicles is another area where the company shows its prowess. As vehicles increasingly incorporate heads-up displays and OLED screens, managing visibility and glare becomes critical. 3M's light management portfolio addresses these challenges by developing films and coatings that enhance readability in various lighting conditions. From reducing reflections on motorcycle LCD dashboards to enabling seamless OLED integration, 3M ensures that information is clear and accessible to drivers, day or night.

Expanding Horizons

Looking ahead, 3M is actively exploring opportunities to enhance its presence in key areas like optics, sensors, and light management. These domains, essential for both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles, present a levelled ground for the company to innovate and grow. The company is also advancing solutions like laser welding alternatives and exploring how new materials can improve efficiency in manufacturing and vehicle performance.

A Centre Of Excellence In India For Automotive Acoustics

India has become a pivotal hub for 3M’s automotive innovation, particularly in acoustics. By achieving a critical mass of technological development and market acceptance, 3M’s India centre has been recognised as a global centre of excellence. Through continuous measurement of its New Product Vitality Index—ensuring that 25% of revenue comes from new products—it has demonstrated its commitment to agility and responsiveness in a rapidly changing industry.

This recognition underscores 3M's strategy of thinking beyond immediate needs to address the challenges of the “day after tomorrow,” he said. By fostering innovation, maximising efficiencies, and reacting swiftly to market changes, it is setting the benchmark for technological excellence in the automotive sector, Bhattacharya said.

Going Forward

As the automotive industry accelerates toward electrification and advanced mobility, the company’s contributions are more critical than ever. By blending cutting-edge material science with a deep understanding of industry dynamics, the company is not only addressing the challenges of today but also paving the way for a smarter, more sustainable future, Bhattacharya, signed off.
