Gogoro India will start manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries in India before the end of this calendar year. In a conversation with Mobility OutlookKaushik Burman, General Manager, Gogoro India, noted that the Taiwan-based company is eager to localise as much as possible in India.

“We have finalised all the stakeholders who would be a part of the Gogoro EV manufacturing ecosystem in India,” he said without mentioning the names of the manufacturing partners.

Currently, the company will focus on retailing electric scooters in the last-mile logistics and the B2B space, which have proved to be the country's biggest adopters of electric two- and three-wheelers.

Burman explained, “What India's B2B EV market has seen is the tip of the iceberg. A revolution is waiting to occur in EV adoption, especially in this segment.”

Initially, the company intends to keep the manufacturing numbers for electric scooters low as it has no immediate plans to enter the electric vehicle B2C market, but its plans for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries to be used in the swap ecosystem are on the higher side.

More Partnerships

While the company has been running a pilot with India-based Zypp Electric for quite some time, Kaushik shared that more such partnerships are on the cards.

“We are a natural partner to all the players in the last mile mobility. Whether it is food delivery, grocery delivery, or any other kind of last-mile delivery, Gogoro electric scooters can do that,” Kaushik said.

The company's scooters are powered by swappable batteries, which can be exchanged quickly. The company had also announced a collaboration with Hero MotoCorp, but now the latter seems to have taken the stationary battery charging route.

As a part of its pilot with Zypp, the company launched its battery-swapping platform and scooters in Delhi NCR. Over 90 electric scooters and six battery swap stations have been deployed under the new phase of this pilot project.

Burman said, “India is a critical market for Gogoro and with the launch of our B2B pilot with Zypp, we are confident that we can bring the best-in-class EV technology and infrastructure to the Indian market. Our ongoing partnerships, especially in the last mile mobility space, are a testament to our commitment to the region, and we look forward to expanding our business in the country and scaling our operations.”

Horace Luke, Founder and CEO, Gogoro said, “Gogoro is accelerating the urban shift to sustainable electric two-wheel transportation in India, and we are committed to fostering an open and diverse ecosystem of businesses and riders that will usher in a new era of accessible smart mobility in India.”
