The Kerala-based charging infrastructure provider, chargeMOD, plans to relocate to a new plant in Thiruvananthapuram by the end of January 2022, primarily due to an increased backlog in catering to the customers' requirements.

Raman M, Co-Founder and Project Head, chargeMOD, told Mobility Outlook that the company has invested INR 12 crore in the new facility, which spans 4000 square feet. A new facility was warranted as the company began facing difficulties due to increasing orders for the chargers, resulting in a massive backlog. It currently operates from a modest factory in Kozhikode with a monthly production capacity of 50 units.

The co-founder noted that the new facility in Thiruvananthapuram, which has a capacity of producing 1,800 units per month, will improve the company's production pace, eventually assisting it in clearing the prior order and accelerating for future expansion.

The firm claims to have confirmed orders from about 175 independent clients, including local grocery store owners, of which only 16 of them have been honoured by delivering the product.

Besides, the charging infrastructure provider has also engaged in a strategic relationship with Kerala State Electricity Board - KSEB in June 2021 to establish 250 charging stations across the state. However, only 45 of these chargers have been deployed. As the company has a stock of 190 chargers ready for installation, it hopes to complete the project within the next 45 days, he said.

Since its inception in 2019, the company has limited its operations to Kerala. However, being an independent charging infrastructure provider, it hopes to construct another 2,000 charging stations in the next eight months covering part of southern India, especially in the routes from connecting a few cities in the state to Bengaluru.

The firm wants to establish itself as the primary charging infrastructure provider from central India to the down South in the long run. This will include the installation of over 5,000 charging stations and a customer base of close to 50,000 clients.
