OPG Mobility is on the path of balancing affordability and innovation in India's cost-sensitive EV market.

Building An EV Ecosystem mobility outlook

OPG Mobility has recently undergone rebranding from Okaya EV to represent better its expanded ambitions in the Indian electric vehicle market. We had a discussion with the company’s Managing Director, Anshul Gupta, where he shed light on how the company was reinforcing its focus on innovation and affordability. He discussed his strategic vision for the company, technological advancements, and expansion plans.

Rebranding To OPG Mobility

Gupta explains that the rebranding from Okaya EV to OPG Mobility signifies a renewed commitment to the core values and entrepreneurial spirit of their founder, Om Prakash Gupta. OPG Mobility aims to support mobility through accessible and technologically advanced electric solutions, encompassing passenger vehicles, commercial transport, and energy sectors. The creation of distinct sub-brands—Ferrato (two-wheelers), OTTOOPG (three-wheelers), and MTEKPOWER (energy solutions)—reinforces brand cohesion, customer trust, and market competitiveness.

Capturing Urban & Rural Markets

Gupta highlights that OPG Mobility recognises the varying demands of urban and rural consumers, ensuring their product range addresses both segments effectively. The Ferrato range caters to urban consumers desiring performance and technology, while affordable electric scooters target rural markets. Simultaneously, the OTTOOPG three-wheelers address commercial transportation needs across diverse demographics. Product affordability has been strategically managed by optimising supply chains and production processes, ensuring quality without compromising innovation or safety standards.

Battery Efficiency & Lightweight Materials

The MD underscores investments in R&D, notably transitioning from lithium-ion to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries and employing advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS). Breakthroughs in energy efficiency, regenerative braking, and the use of lightweight materials are integral to OPG Mobility’s development strategy. Models such as the Ferrato DEFY 22 are set to embody these advancements, significantly enhancing product reliability, safety, and overall performance.

Scaling Production

Gupta outlines ambitious expansion plans, with targeted sales of 45,000 two-wheelers and 15,000 three-wheelers by year-end, supported by the addition of 600 service centres across India. Their manufacturing facilities in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, include dedicated plants for vehicle assembly, battery production, and parts manufacturing, all aiming to meet rising demand while maintaining stringent quality controls. Automation and facility expansion initiatives will further drive manufacturing capacity, ensuring sustained growth and product excellence.

Overcoming Supply Chain Challenges

Addressing supply chain constraints, particularly semiconductor and battery cell shortages, Gupta affirms OPG Mobility’s commitment to increasing local sourcing in alignment with Indian government directives. Currently, critical component localisation stands at around 30-40%, but aggressive strategies are in place to raise this to 50% within five years. Investments in local production facilities and robust collaborations with domestic suppliers form a key part of their strategy, significantly reducing dependency on international markets and enhancing supply chain resilience.

Strengthening Dealership Networks

Gupta elaborates on the critical criteria influencing dealership selection, which include prime location, financial stability, customer service excellence, and alignment with OPG Mobility’s brand values. The company implements stringent training programmes, regular audits, and customer feedback mechanisms to ensure service consistency across over 500 dealerships nationwide. Recognising the challenges in Tier-3 and Tier-4 markets, OPG Mobility customises its sales and service strategies to address local infrastructure limitations, awareness issues, and affordability constraints.

Revenue Projections

Gupta confidently shares projections of significant sales growth for the next fiscal year—45,000 electric two-wheelers and 12,000 electric three-wheelers—highlighting several key drivers. Enhanced localisation, an expanded dealer network, and innovative connected mobility solutions such as advanced telematics and AI-driven diagnostics underpin these growth projections. Furthermore, OPG Mobility is actively working on integrating advanced telematics, remote diagnostics, and AI-driven predictive maintenance into its vehicles, significantly enhancing user experience and operational efficiency.
